Staining Coating & Painting
Painting & Staining Your Deck
All painted or stained surfaces need regular cleaning every 10 to 18 months. This removes any organic growth before painting or staining. Refinishing IPE wood involves a special cleaning and neutralizing process.
Deck staining is the best way to keep a natural wood look. Stains come in semi-transparent and solid colors. We use TWP and PPG (Sikkens) wood stains. In our experience, they last a bit longer and are better at preventing water damage.
We use a strong bonding primer and thick, quality paint for treated lumber. We also seal all joints using high-expansion caulking. This prevents hidden water damage.
The Importance of Protection
All treated wood decks will turn gray over time when left unsealed and unprotected from direct sunlight and rain. A lack of protection leads to unnecessary deck repairs. The lack of protection also causes splinters and wood to fray. The climate here in Raleigh, North Carolina, causes wood swelling, and the nails will eventually back out.
We have been staining and recoating exterior surfaces, including decks, for over 22 years. Our comprehensive wood services let you enjoy outdoor living all over again!
Deck Floors
Deck Floor Upgrades & Options
The most affordable way to give an existing deck a facelift is to replace the deck floor. Wood floor planks are often the first to show wear. You might see cracks, splits, rot, or warping. Our most common deck repair service is removing old flooring. It truly makes an old deck look updated, at a fraction of the cost of a new one.
When we remove the old floor, we inspect the structure, checking the joists, ledger board, and posts for wood rot. It is important to replace all damaged wood. So, we address all loose or damaged structures. Then, we install the new floor. Ground-contact and composite are our most common. IPE and other hardwoods are also options.

Deck Building Upgrades
Deck upgrades are exciting and beneficial. Once we understand your vision, we can offer deck design solutions that stay within your budget.
Kiln Dried & Ground Contact Options
Using kiln-dried lumber for deck repairs has a significant advantage. It’s already dry, so you can stain it right after installation. Wet lumber needs to dry for 2 to 6 months before you can paint or stain it.
Using standard pressure-treated wood is the most cost-effective way to build a deck. However, low-slung wooden landings need ground contact grade treated lumber. This is a very important detail for exterior wood deck construction.
Lucky for you, we use ground contact lumber on every project!
