No two finishes are the same. Manufacturers can’t match finishes because they don’t measure gloss and sheen the same way, and there is no standardized method across brands for determining how shiny a surface is. Let’s just say they are all measuring with different rulers. Any gloss finish below high-gloss is measured at a 60-degree angle, while high-gloss is viewed at 20 degrees. Flat and low-sheen finishes are measured at an 85-degree angle. The lower the gloss level, the wider the angle needed to get a higher reading. In other words, a higher angle can artificially make it look shinier. With no real shared standard for reading a finish, labels with satin, eggshell, low luster, low sheen, flat enamel, matte, and flat can all be different between brands.
