Addressing the Myths of Refinishing Vinyl Materials

If someone has told you that you cannot paint vinyl siding, they are wrong. It is the best way to prevent replacing it. It will last 7 to 15 years longer with little maintenance. However, there are precautionary measures to take to make sure the coating sticks and does not cause damage.

We restore vinyl on homes in Raleigh and around the Triangle. All surfaces are cleaned, and we use vinyl-safe materials and colors that will not wrap the siding.

We Repair and Replace Damages

Contrary to what most think, vinyl does not last forever. All plastic outdoor home surfaces begin to fade within 10 to 15 years. As it ages, it also becomes brittle and prone to cracking.

We are a Raleigh contractor providing exterior home protection, replacements, and repairs. If you live in the area, hiring us means you get an entire team of siding experts. We will replace any cracked siding and make sure there are no loose pieces.

Updating Vinyl Siding is Easier Than You Think

Cleaning the surface is the most important part of our process. After it dries for at least one day, our painters assess the area for any missed or concealed damage.

We do not use primer when updating vinyl unless the surface is extremely chalky. In these areas, the paint will have difficulty sticking. Vinyl-safe primers also improve coverage when changing colors.

The best way to cover large siding is with a sprayer. We spray all surfaces to ensure an even finish without brush marks. Spraying also prevents drips and gets extra materials into hard-to-reach areas where the siding overlaps.

How Important is the Color?

Hiring a company that doesn’t know how to restore this finicky surface could end in disaster. If you are not sure your contractor knows what they’re doing, companies like Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore offer great product guidance. But here is a little more of what you need to know.

Premium outdoor paints contain more acrylic polymers. Vinyl polymers adhere better. So, mid-grade lines such as Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint and Benjamin Moore Elements are the better choices because they contain more vinyl.

Avoid deep, rich hues when choosing colors. Dark colors will draw more heat, causing the coating to blister and peel away from the vinyl siding. Dark colors also contain glycol and other additives that cause adverse effects, such as warping.

Preventing Additional Damages

Old siding is more brittle, so it’s easy to damage. When we start your home, our team is careful where they place their ladders to prevent additional damage.

We also mask and protect all areas. We avoid coating metal surfaces like windows and other areas with metal cladding.

Additionally, we aim to start in the shady area. Hot surfaces can cause the paint to dry too quickly or the siding to deform or crinkle.

Ideal Weather Conditions

Ideal temperatures for coating vinyl siding range from 40 to 85 degrees. Keep in mind that air temperatures can differ from surface temperatures. Sun-exposed sides will be hotter than shady areas.

Surfaces must also be clean and dry. Sometimes, water gets caught between the seams where the siding overlaps. So, it’s best not to start if it rained the day before or when there is heavy dew.

Maintenance and Things to Know

Paint sticks best to aged vinyl siding. New siding has a slick surface, which makes it more challenging to bond. The solution is to prime it to promote better adhesion.

Here is a maintenance concern your Raleigh painters may not be telling you about. Once the siding has its new finish, it is more prone to mold and mildew growth on the surface. As the surface begins to break down after 3 to 5 years, it becomes more porous. To overcome this challenge, have your house washed every year.

Washing will make everything last longer. A soft wash using bleach, soap, and Trisodium Phosphate kills organic growth, and low pressure prevents damage.
