Painting Season in Raleigh Broken Down by Months
Moderate weather between 50 and 80 degrees offers the best time to paint. Popular painting seasons begin in mid-spring and taper off when it gets hot. Then, the demand increases in early fall once the temperatures are moderate again.
Each region in the U.S. experiences these yearly seasonal temperature shifts at different times.
The Best Time to Paint Raleigh Homes
Heated and cooled interior spaces are not affected by outdoor weather. Customer concerns indoors are more related to convenience. Summer vacations, taxes, holidays, and other family planning and budgeting are more of a factor.
However, painting outside is affected by snow, rain, humidity, pollen, and high heat.
How Each Month is Changing
In Raleigh and across the US, temperatures and seasons are changing. Summers are hotter, and winters are even milder here in Raleigh, North Carolina. So, our painting season and demands have shifted.
Raleigh has always had mild winters. Just before winter came, we would receive an increase in calls for exterior painting. After winter, in early spring, we would receive calls from homeowners planning and budgeting before the tax season. With the slight changes in weather, calls are more consistent, and there is less of a rush during these times.
House Painting Advantages and Challenges Based on Month
January
Early January is a slow period for painters as people are still in holiday mode. However, the temperatures still allow for a few good weeks of above 50 degrees. So, interior and exterior painting is still alive and well.
However, commercial businesses often have leftover funds for the fiscal year to get small projects, such as painting, done.
February
Mid to late February is consistently the most challenging month of the year. Arctic blasts and freezing temperatures eliminate the opportunity to paint outdoors. Customers often wait and anticipate warmer weather, which also affects indoor projects.
The pollen starts earlier in March due to the warmer temperatures of recent years. Early pollen allows for a longer spring and summer painting season.
April
April is commonly a rainy season here in NC. However, the rain began to come earlier in April than before. So, in mid-April, our exterior painters are hard at work.
May
May is one of the most comfortable months for everyone. The weather is stable and consistent, and everyone has embraced warmer temperatures. There is less dew on the ground, and painters can start earlier to maximize hours within the day. This also means your project will get done quicker.
June
Mid to late June is a really good time for interior painting. The pollen is completely gone, and the temperatures are not too hot. So, as painters are entering conditioned spaces, you don’t have to worry about contaminants or hot air entering your home.
July
July is a challenge here in Raleigh. If you have kids, summer break and other commitments will limit your time. Early summer also brings high humidity here in North Carolina. We use Benjamin Moore Element and SW Latitude, which work exceptionally well under these weather conditions.
August
No one wants to be outside in temperatures over 95 degrees. During this month, we are all over the high temperatures and are ready for fall. Therefore, most clients will put off home services for a while.
September
The remnants of summer still persist in early September. But with a few cooler weeks and the kids back in school, families that have home improvement lists begin planning and budgeting.
October
The early weeks of October are some of the best opportunities to paint your home. Like spring, this season is mild and more enjoyable. However, early morning dew creates challenges for exterior wood staining. Decks and porches must be dry. Therefore, painters often have to start later in the morning.
November
This is the month of the time change, which shortens work hours. November is also the season for major holidays such as Thanksgiving.
December
December marks the final rush for people who have waited too long for the annual projects that they overlooked. Exterior repairs and painting are prioritized to help prevent further rot and damage before wet winters arrive.
